At first glance, you might think a Corgi Mastiff mix is something we can only see in cartoons and the imaginary world. But a Tibetan Mastiff Corgi Mix is very much possible and reality.

As you can imagine, this dog is a cross between the Tibetan Mastiff and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Many people when they read Corgi Mastiff mix think it is a mix between the English Mastiff and the Pembroke Corgi.

But what makes things even more interesting is the fact we are talking about the Tibetan Mastiff here. Let’s take a look.

Meet the Breed

The Tibetan Mastiff Corgi mix is an interesting and rare hybrid dog breed. Its parents are the Tibetan Mastiff and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Why is it rare? Well, for starters, the Tibetan Mastiff is one of the rarest dogs. And it is quite expensive. Not to mention, its natural habitat is the Tibetan Mountains, quite a distance from England and Great Britain.

The unusual crossbreed is something pet parents have been looking for in the last several years. They want a big fluffy family dog with a lovable temperament.

This dog combines the friendly nature of the Pembroke Corgi with the furry and fluffy appearance of the Tibetan Mastiff. What do we get as the final product? Let’s take a look.

Meet the parents

We have to mention that the American Kennel Club doesn’t recognize designer dog breeds or hybrids such as the Pembroke Welsh Corgi mix. Add in the fact there are not so many dogs like this one, and it is hard to imagine what the dog looks like and acts like.

The best way to address those temperament, training, and appearance traits is to look at the parents.

Corgi

We start with the Corgi parent breed, a popular dog among owners around the world. Queen Elizabeth II made the dog even more popular. Originally bred in the United Kingdom, the Corgi and its big butt have made rounds around the world. For this mixed breed, breeders use either a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, or Cardigan Welsh Corgi.

Famous for its distinctive appearance and charming personality, the Corgi will win your heart instantly. Here are some common personality traits of the Pembroke Corgi.

  • Highly intelligent dog famous for its problem-solving abilities
  • These dogs are quick learners and will excel in obedience training
  • Highly energetic breed that needs plenty of exercise to keep them happy and in good spirits
  • Generally friendly and sociable dogs, they get along with children, other pets, and strangers
  • Extremely loyal to their owner
  • They have a playful and goofy nature, as they remain puppies forever
  • They are naturally alert and make great watchdogs
  • Corgis have an instinct to be attentive to their surrounding
  • Adaptable and can adjust to different living conditions
  • While they are loyal and loving, they are also independent and enjoy spending time alone

– Corgis were bred for herding cattle and may retain their strong herding instinct. They can show behaviors like nipping at heels or trying to herd family members

Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan Mastiff is the prized dog of the Tibetan monks. These dogs have a long history of being used as guardians of people. But they also thrive living among people.

Nowadays, the Tibetan Mastiff is famous as one of the most expensive dogs in the world.

Weighing between 80 and 150 pounds, Tibetan Mastiffs are not for everyone. These large breed dogs can be quite a lot to handle. They are protective of the family and wary of strangers. While they look like a big ball of fur, their character is something not everyone can handle. With that in mind, here are some personality traits of the Tibetan Mastiff parent breed.

  • Famous for their independent nature, they are not eager to please and may show a level of aloofness
  • Fiercely loyal to their family, but can be protective of them in public
  • They have strong territorial instincts and are natural guardians
  • Tibetan Mastiffs are vigilant in protecting their home and family
  • Despite their guardian instincts, they have a mellow and calm demeanor
  • When properly socialized, they can be good family dogs, known for being gentle around children
  • Generally reserved with strangers, and may be aloof in certain situations

Corgi Mastiff Mix Appearance

Now we can talk about what your Corgi Mastiff mix will look like. As we know, dogs inherit physical characteristics from both parents. In this case, the trick is we have one extremely large dog and one small dog.

So, what can you expect from your mixed breed dog? Well, it depends on which genes will be more dominant. If the puppy takes after its Corgi parent, it will have a short tail and short legs. On the other hand, if it inherits genetics from the Tibetan Mastiff, it will be a strong, large, athletic dog.

In any case, you will get a dog that is fluffier than the average Corgi. Yet, because the parents are so different, the appearance of your puppy may vary from one dog to another.

Now, how big do these dogs get? Well, a Tibetan Mastiff can stand up to 30 inches tall and weigh as much as 160 pounds. The Corgi, on the other hand, stands at 12 inches at most and weighs up to 30 pounds. The exact height and weight of your Mastiff Corgi mix is hard to predict.

Let’s talk about coat color and length. As we said before, this dog should have a fluffy coat. Both parents have a double coat, meaning your hybrid dog will be double-coated, no matter which genes it inherits.

And when it comes to colors, the range is huge. Corgis come in black and tan, red, sable, and fawn colors, with or without markings. Tibetan Mastiffs come in blue, gray, tan, brown, gold, red, and black colors. Between the two parents, there are many color combinations you can get.

Corgi Tibetan Mastiff Mix Temperament

Similar to the appearance, the temperament of the Corgi Mastiff mix can be difficult to predict. We can guarantee you only one thing. That is your puppy will be a true cuddle bug. This dog inherits a cuddling personality from both parents.

The designer dog should be friendly, loyal, protective, and show a bit of guardian instincts around his family. Early socialization is a must. Even if your puppy doesn’t inherit the territorial nature of the Tibetan Mastiff, proper socialization will help you raise a happy, sociable, and lively dog.

We have to mention another thing. Chances are, you will end up with an independent, almost stubborn dog. Work with your puppy early on to tackle early behavior issues. The earlier you begin instilling good behavior habits, the better-behaved dog you will have.

With hybrid dog breeds, there is no certainty when it comes to the temperament. But if you look at the personality traits of both parents, you can be sure what to expect to a certain degree.

That is why we talked about each parent individually in the beginning.

Is Corgi Mastiff Mix Good Guardian?

Yes, both parents are loyal and protective. This might surprise you, but as a herding dog, the Corgi is protective as well. They can be quite loud in barking to alert you. And the Tibetan Mastiff is one of the best protectors in the canine world.

As I mentioned before, training is crucial to raising a well-behaved dog. You are dealing with a stubborn and independent dog, one that has inherited the stubbornness of both parents.

These dogs bring a combination of independence and sensitivity. It is your job as a dog owner and pet parent to find the sweet spot between consistency and gentle training methods. That might be challenging, but positive reinforcement should work fine.

As well as training, early socialization is crucial as well. Make sure to socialize your puppy with different people, environments, situations, and animals.

Exercise Needs

This might surprise you, but a Tibetan Mastiff mix is a moderately active dog. Tibetan Mastiffs are large dogs, but they need a moderate amount of exercise. They are not as lazy as the Great Dane.

Corgis, as herding dogs, need a good amount of exercise as well. All in all, your Corgi Mastiff mix should get between 30 and 45 minutes of physical exercise per day.

Corgi Mastiff Mix Health Issues

In the past several years, breeders have taken upon crossbreeding to reduce the health issues of different breeds. For example, that is why you see Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever dogs crossed with healthier breeds.

In this case, we have to talk about the health issues of both breeds. Tibetan Mastiffs are prone to hip dysplasia, eye conditions, and elbow dysplasia. Corgis are prone to intervertebral disc disease because of their long back.

Generally speaking, both breeds have a lifespan between 10 and 12 years. Your mixed breed should live between 11 and 13 years.

Grooming

These dogs shed quite a lot. Both parents are heavy shedders because of their double coat. You should provide weekly brushing to your designer dog. In theory, two times per week should be enough. But you can always increase that to three times per week.

And during blowout season, we suggest brushing your dog every day.

Three Reasons You Shouldn’t Get One

  • They might retain a territorial instinct
  • Heavy shedders
  • You cannot predict the size of your puppy

Three Reasons You Should Get One
